Bishop Mathew Kukah Centre to hold debate for Jonathan, Buhari, others
AS Nigeria enters an election year, the Kukah Centre, a foundation by the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah is planning series of debate between President Goodluck Jonathan and his major challenger, flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major General Muhammadu Buhari, various governorship candidates and other elective office seekers in the country.
The debate, according to the organisation, would give Nigerians insights into the programmes and policies of those who are aspiring to lead them.
The Presidential and gubernatorial debates are part of the series of the activities, which the Centre hopes to embark upon in the New Year, according to the programme of events made available to The Guardian in a statement in Abuja yesterday by the Centre’s Acting Director, Dr. Martins Aginam.
He said the Centre which was inaugurated on December 9, last year, hopes to play a pivotal role in the critical areas such as setting agenda for what the key campaign issues should be; prevention of the promotion of violence and propagation of hate speeches; ensuring that elections are largely free and fair and managing potential post-election violence through dispute resolution.
Aginam called on Nigerians to rededicate themselves to building a safe strong and united Nigeria anchored on common good, just and truly democratic society.
The Director described last year as a most trying time for the country, given the immense security and developmental challenges that it had continued to face, but expressed confidence that the new year promises a better moment for the country.
According to Aginam, “Despite these challenges, may we in this new year rededicate ourselves to building a safe, just and truly democratic society anchored on the common good; a nation, where the right of citizenship is value and one capable of realising its potentials as a beacon of hope for Africa”
