‘111 women die daily in Nigeria’
The United Nations Population Fund
(UNFPA) facilitator, Dr. Rabi Sageer, has said that a minimum of 111
women die daily from child birth complications in Nigeria.
Sageer, in an interview with journalists said most of the deaths were caused by over bleeding before and after delivery, especially in the rural areas where many pregnant women trekked long distances to hospitals for delivery.
She said: “About 111 women die daily because of child birth complications. Bleeding after delivery is the greatest killer of women during pregnancy, but this is not widely reported as when a politician wins election.”
She said government at all levels were not giving adequate attention to the plight of pregnant women, “despite the fact that 40 per cent of the deaths recorded could be prevented through healthy timing and spacing”.
Sageer said there was urgent need for exposure to enable mothers properly understand the safe methods of family planning and to ensure adequate ante-natal healthcare.
