Father Drags Children To Court Over Late Wife’s Property
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Wellington Hotel, Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, has sued the children of his late wife, Mrs Mary Agbonifo (nee Ogbevire), over her property.
In the suit filed at the Warri South Customary Court with suit number WSACC/M/261/2014, Chief Godspower Agbonifo is praying the court to include him in the sharing of his late wife’s property.
The respondents include Deacon Tony Okene, Paul Okene, Efeturi Okene and Festus Agbonifo as well as four new generation banks operating in Effurun and Warri.
One of the family members of the deceased, Chief Julius Ogbevire, expressed shock at the action of his sister’s husband. He said: “This is shocking as we have not seen this in the entire Urhobo nation where father takes his own children to court to be included in the sharing of his late wife’s property.
I see this as taboo in Urhobo nation for a title chief to go to that extent.
“There is no part of Urhobo nation that we have heard such narration where a father struggles to be included, using court as means to be part of sharing of his late wife’s property.
This is appalling and has never been a tradition of Urhobo.
