Jigawa launches injectable polio vaccine
Jigawa State Commissioner for Health,
Dr. Abubakar Tafida, yesterday launched injectable polio vaccine at the
Dutse General Hospital.
Tafida said because of the state government’s commitment, no case of polio has been recorded in the state in the past 28 months. He said introduction of the injectable polio vaccine was a great achievement.
“Jigawa is the first state to introduce the injectable polio vaccine in the northern part of Nigeria. This is a great achievement considering the fact that we have succeeded in providing a relatively good routine immunisation and supplemental immunisation against the polio virus in the state. With the injectable vaccine, only three doses are needed to complete the whole exercise unlike the oral one of five doses,” he said.
He said the newly introduced vaccine could be combined with other vaccines against measles and whooping cough. Tafida said over 80 per cent of the populace can access to quality healthcare and that the state government also introduced some pro-poor packages.
