Bauchi govt owing teachers 11 months salaries

Bauchi govt owing teachers 11 months salaries

The Bauchi State government has said that the delay in payment of teachers salaries for 11 months  was because of the inability of the teachers to open accounts, and their failure to “come forward for proper documentation”.
State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Aminu Mohammed, spoke in reaction to  a protest by the teachers over unpaid salaries.
Mohammed said government recruited 5000 teachers out of which 3000 were deployed to the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) while 2000 were deployed to the state Ministry of Education.
He said those of them who completed their documentation have since started receiving their salaries.
“Even those who have not been receiving salaries; we invited them and asked them which banks they would want their monies paid into. We then negotiated with three banks and they agreed to open sundry accounts for them; once they meet requirements for opening bank account, they will start receiving their salaries,” he said.
The teachers had earlier marched to the Government House Bauchi, to protest the non-payment of their salaries for 11 months.
They said they were experiencing untold hardship due to unpaid salaries and urged government to address the situation.
Engineer Tijjani Abubakar, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, lamented that since the state government employed the teachers on April 16, 2014, they have not been paid.
He said: “We want Governor Isa Yuguda to intervene and address this situation,  because we are suffering, The situation is even more pathetic for those of us posted to remote areas. How can teachers transport, feed and accommodate themselves without salaries? For 11 months now, the Ministry of Education and Accountant General have been telling us to be patient, but the situation has not changed. The state government paid some of us two months salary in December 2014. We want an explanation for this kind of partial treatment, where some will be paid and others are left out.”
