Nasarawa State Governor, Al-Makura loses bid to stop fresh impeachment
Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura
Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura has lost the bid to stop members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly from embarking on fresh moves to oust him.
The court denied him protection against a fresh impeachment proceeding from the House, last Friday.
The court held that the provisions of Section 188 of the constitution are clear, explaining that the governor cannot be tried on charges previously used by the Assembly to impeach him, although the presiding judge said the governor failed to establish any proof that the House was after him with the old charges.
The court threw out the major declaratory reliefs sought by the governor’s lawyer, Chief Wale Olanipekun (SAN) to stop the Assembly from embarking on a fresh impeachment move.
It also threw out all six injunctive reliefs sought by Olanipekun, mainly seeking to restrain the Assembly from further initiating or embarking on any proceedings aimed at removing the governor and from taking any further steps and actions geared towards persecuting him.
The governor tendered newspapers with reports of fresh claims to impeach him by the Assembly, asking the court to stop the lawmakers, accordingly.
