3,051 die of AIDS in Nigeria in 4 years
Nigeria has recorded a total of 3,051
deaths out of 187,846 AIDS cases within a span of four years, the
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported.
This was part of the 2012 Annual Abstract of Statistics released by the organisation this month, chronicling AIDS cases and deaths recorded between 2007 and 2010.
Analysis of the data revealed that Lagos State which recorded the highest number of fatalities nationwide, lost 632 persons to the disease within the period.
Edo, Benue and Anambra trailed behind with 327, 283 and 224 fatalities with Gombe as the only state in the North-east and North-west that recorded deaths in three digits with 163 cases.
The South-west recorded the highest number of deaths, followed by the South-south and the South-east.
The North-central had the highest number of death in northern Nigeria, totalling 542 deaths while the North-east followed with a total of 360 deaths.
The North-west had the least recorded number of deaths in the country with 150.
The report indicated that 36,291 AIDS cases were recorded in 2007 and ever since, the scourge has been on the increase apart from a remarkable slump recorded in 2010. In 2008, a total of 44,198 cases were recorded, with a huge increase in 2009, totalling 64,082 cases.
The report indicated that in 2010, 43,275 cases were recorded, the only slump recorded in four years.
The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) said that in 2013, there were 35 million people living with HIV.
NACA added that since the start of the epidemic, around 78 million people have become infected with HIV and 39 million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses.
