Police Arraign Six For Vandalising NITEL Cables
The Lagos State Police Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday arraigned six men before the Federal High Court in the state for allegedly tampering with underground armoured cables belonging to the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited.
The men: Adolphus Audu, 28; Marcel Mmadu, 25; Paul Bassey, 27; Kabiru Garuba, 30; Abdulrasaki Musa, 27; and Ahmed Babatunde, 23, were docked on a two count charge of conspiracy and unlawful damage of NITEL property.
According to the police prosecutor, Goddy Osuyi informed the court that, the accused persons with some persons still at large allegedly committed the offence on October 22, 2013 at Union Bank Car Park, Marina, Lagos.
Osuyi also alleged that the accused persons unlawfully disconnected, tampered with, removed and damaged underground armoured wires or cables, belonging to NITEL, the value of which had yet to be ascertained."
He further claimed that they by their action violated Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act. Cap C38, Vol. 4, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Osuyi also maintained that the accused persons were also liable to punishment under Section 1 (11) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap. M17, Vol. 9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and urged the court through their lawyers to grant them bail.
After listening to the lawyers the court held that it was only the second defendant, Mmadu that was able to placed enough fact before it to enable the court exercise it discretion in his favour.
The judge granted Mmadu bail in the sum of N200, 000 and also ordered him to provide two reputable sureties in like sums.
The court further inaisted that the sureties must own landed properties within 200 metres radius of the court.
The court then directed that he should be remand in prison custody along with the others accused persons pending when he would perfect the bail conditions.
The case has been adjourned till March 25, 2015 for commencement of trial.
