FG places security agencies on red alert over fuel scarcity
THE Federal Government, on Thursday, placed all the nation’s security
agencies on a red alert over the fresh fuel scarcity being experienced
across the state of the federation and Abuja.
This came as a result of fears of possible violence being entertained by tanker drivers ahead the general election.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday night by the Department of State Service (DSS), the service disclosed that it had observed lately the build-up of queues at petrol stations.
The statement, signed by its spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, stated that investigation had revealed that the trucks that would hitherto have loaded products from the South for distribution in the North were reluctant to do so.
According to her, “this development is premised on fears by National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) of being caught in likely election violence as was witnessed in 2011, which resulted in loss of lives and property.”
The statement disclosed that “the government recognises the fact that NARTO and such other unions provide essential services and, as such, adequate security arrangements have been emplaced to guarantee their safety.”
It stated that consequently, brigade commanders, police commissioners and state directors of the DSS had been directed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the IGP and the DGSS respectively to provide adequate security.
Also, the Federal Government has ordered a water-tight security at the Nigerian borders, to prevent infiltration of the country by foreign mercenaries, ahead the general election.
This came just as the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, called on security agencies to provide effective synergy towards ensuring free, fair and credible conduct of the polls
