Boko Haram: LG chairman, councillors in Adamawa hold session under tree
Chairman and councillors of Hong Local
Government in Adamawa State on Tuesday met under a tree at the council
secretariat, which was razed by Boko Haram insurgents.
Presenting the budget of N1.8bn christened ‘Budget of Consolidation and Restoration of Hope’ to the Legislative Council, the chairman, Ahmed Yerima Isa, lamented the dwindling fortunes of Hong area as a result of insurgency and fall in oil prices.
He said the council was not deterred by the destruction of the secretariat, hence the resolve to conduct government functions under a tree. He said the determination of the council to resume official business despite the challenges would encourage residents to return.
He called on the state and federal government to assist in rebuilding the secretariat and other public buildings destroyed by the insurgents, saying the council does not have the financial capacity to fix the structure.
Yerima called on displaced residents of the area to return home and help revive social and economic activities, adding that the council is working with security agencies and vigilante to ensure lasting peace.
The chairman noted that the attack left over 300 families homeless in Hong town.
