Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters who attacked Baga town, a fishing community in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, have captured the town, fleeing residents said in Maiduguri on Sunday.
The capture sent many fleeing into Maiduguri, the capital of the troubled Borno state.
One of them, Ibrahim Kaka  told our correspondent in Maiduguri that the insurgents have hoisted their flag at the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) after attacking the military base.
Our correspondents saw thousands of fleeing residents at the Baga motor park in Maiduguri and some anxious residents of the state capital were also seen waiting for their relatives.
Kaka who arrived Maiduguri around 5pm on Sunday said he slept in the bush and trekked many miles before he got a bus which brought him to Maiduguri.
“It was around 5am yesterday (Saturday) when we started hearing gunshots and they gain entrance into the Multinational National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) where they killed many civilian leaving in the barrack,” he said.
Another fleeing resident, Modu Isa said that the insurgents also followed people fleeing to the bush where they killed many people.
“They did not spare anybody as they shot at men, women and even children who were fleeing inside the bush,” he added.
Our correspondent also saw some residents of Maiduguri at the motor park who came to search for their relatives living in Baga.
The fleeing residents have now occupied the Jajeri primary school behind the Baga market.
